Phoenix Rod and Gun Club

Phoenix, Arizona — On Saturday, August 30th, The Desert Sharp Shooters held a 500 yard prone match at The Phoenix Rod and Gun Club. Everyone showed up to find that the range had been pretty well torn up. Two severe monsoon storms, with heavy rain and wind from 80 to 100mph, had pushed their way through the two nights previous. After close considerations, it was determined that the match would be held at the 300 yard line, using 600 yard reduced targets, due to range damage. The entrance to the dirt road leading to the pits had some damage from heavy rain and flood waters passing over it. The 300 yard line wind flag was dangling from a metal flag pole that was completely bent in half from the wind. Many of the remaining wind flags were shredded from high gusting winds. It was no mystery that Mother Nature had passed though.

The weather was rather nice for an Arizona summer day. Temperatures reached a fantastic 72°, with winds at 7 miles per hour gusting to 15. The wind was, for the most part, cooperating with the shooters, as it was blowing straight back.

A grand total of 7 shooters showed up for the match, Darren Sucato and Mark Ahern (F-class rifles), Bob Jensen, Doug Popadince and German Salazar (Match rifles), Brent White and Junior Shooter, Nia Pinnow (Service rifles). Because of the condition of the range, shooters decided to make this a practice match, not for points. German Salazar generously took time to coach many of the shooters. It turned out to be a fun day, full of new experiences. Brent White shot his Service rifle in a match for the first time today, and Bob Jensen took time to sight in a new rifle. Everyone defiantly got some experience reading the wind, and shooting in less than perfect light conditions. All in all, it was a great day!

Next weekend will be a 50-shot across the course match at Phoenix Rod and Gun Club!

2008 World Speed Shooting Championship

KC Eusebio and his trophy!

PIRU, Calif. — Spc. KC Eusebio of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) is once again the world’s fastest gun as he won the Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships in a new record time of 79.16 seconds. It is the second time Eusebio, who hails from Diamond Bar, California, has won the coveted title and the third time it has gone to a USAMU shooter in the last four years.

Eusebio topped a field the world’s best shooters including second place finisher BJ Norris, who also took second in 2007, third place shooter and 2006 champion JJ Racaza, fellow USAMU shooter and the defending world champion SSG Max Michel who placed fourth and revolver legend Jerry Miculek who finished fifth overall.

“KC is recognized as one of the fastest shooters in the world and anytime he steps foot on a speed shooting range he’s immediately among those favored to win. His record setting performance this year has set the bar incredibly high and the shooting world eagerly awaits next year’s match when KC will defend his title,” said Dave Thomas, Executive Director of the Steel Challenge Shooting Association.

Only two new world records were set by the top shooters. Max Michel set a new world record on the stage Pendulum shooting a 10.07 to crush the previous record of 10.72 previously held by Jerry Miculek. BJ Norris also set a world record by beating Max Michel’s time of 10.06 on the stage Speed Option by shooting a 9.81. Both Michel and Norris each hold three of the eight world records. Max Michel

Among the women shooters Kay Clark-Miculek claimed an amazing seventh World Speed Shooting Championship having won the title in 2006-2004, 2001, 2000 and 1997. She also holds all the current world records for the eight stages in the Steel Challenge.

“Kay is simply the best female shooter in the world with an uncanny ability to win again and again. No other shooter, male or female, has so completely dominated the Steel Challenge like Kay has and there’s no reason to believe we won’t see Kay’s name atop the leader board in the future,” said Thomas.

Also competing in the Open Division were Jim Duncan of Hemet, Ichiro Nagata of Le Grand and Deleana Saylor of Crescent City, California and Ryan Leonard of Canby, Oregon. Leonard led the group taking the title as Overall Junior by a margin of 1.43 seconds in a time of 96.14 that was good enough for 21st overall. Nagata shot a time of 113.96 to take the Distinguished Senior title. Duncan’s 120.53 won him the title as Overall Senior by just 1.05 seconds. And the 12 year-old Saylor took the title as top Pre-Teen.

In the Limited match, Owasso, Oklahoma resident Phil Strader of the U.S. Shooting Academy posted the fastest time and edged out second place finisher JJ Racaza by just 0.91 of a second. Strader’s time of 92.58 was good enough for 10th place overall.

Strader also won the Iron Sighted Rimfire Pistol match in a time of 85.51 beating out Seiichi Ishikawa.

Team Glock’s Dave Sevigny of Mableton, Georgia won the Open Rimfire Pistol match with a time of 69.26 edging out BJ Norris by just 0.54 of a second. Sevigny also placed fourth in the Limited match and seventh overall shooting his Open Glock pistol. Kay Clark-Miculek

There was little surprise in the revolver division as Team Smith & Wesson shooters locked up the titles. In the Optical Sighted Revolver division the title went to Jerry Miculek. His time of 89.57, which placed Miculek fifth overall, was more than 17 seconds faster than his closest competitor, Mark Itzstein of Little Elm, Texas. Miculek also took top honors in the Rimfire Rifle match again beating Itzstein but this time by a smaller margin of 2.22 seconds.

Team Smith & Wesson’s other wheelgunner, David Olhasso of Holland, Pennsylvania, outshot John Bagakis of Livermore, California by 5.42 seconds in the Iron Sighted Revolver match to claim the title. Ohlasso switched guns, going with a Smith & Wesson semi-automatic M&P pistol to help him take the Stock Service Pistol title. Olhasso beat out Seiichi Ishikawa for the title shooting a time of 119.68 which was just 1.85 seconds faster than Ishikawa’s 121.53.

In the Enhanced Service Pistol match, Taran Butler of Simi Valley, California claimed the title of fastest gun by shooting a time of 119.63 to beat out Mark Hobbs of Coarsegold, California by nearly 10 seconds. Butler’s time also won him the SureFire X300 Lightning Challenge which required shooters to attach an X300 to their pistol and compete with it throughout the entire match.

In the Custom Defensive Pistol match JT Tedder of Moorpark, California beat fellow Golden State shooter Jeff Ryan of Redondo Beach by 14.69 seconds with a time of 137.38 to win the match.

Rounding out the handgun competition, Clyde Harrison shot a time of 168.23 seconds beating Frank D’Amato of Mesa, Arizona in the Single Action Revolver match. Max Michel In the Shotgun match it was Butler again beating Hobbs to walk away with the title, but this time by just 2.1 seconds. In the match that was sponsored by Vang Comp Systems, competitors shot two stages of knock down popper style targets using a Vang Comp full house pump shotgun.

The Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championship is the crown jewel competition in the sport of Speed Shooting which is governed by the Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA). Both professional and amateur shooters competed for their share of over $350,000 in cash and prizes. More than 200 competitors from 19 states and 4 foreign countries faced off against the clock and eight stages of fire in the three-day event held outside Los Angeles.

2008 Masters International Shooting Competition

Masters Pistol Competition

The Masters Pistol competition that is held at PASA Park in Barry Illinois historically has offered challenging competition for the pistol shooter that wants to test their cross discipline shooting skills and this year was no exception. The action shooting event is shot on 3 different courses, Precision , Long Range, & Action, with the combined performance in each course determining the shooters score. There is a recently added revolver division for the wheel gun shooter.

The Masters is a three gun event with shooters divided into 2 categories “Professional” and “Sportsman”. The precision event is shot at Olympic Biathlon targets 1.77” and 4.5” in diameter at 25 & 50 meters using .22 rimfire. The Long Range, where the targets, 12”, 9” and 6” discs, start at 75 and go out to 200 meters, can be shot using a revolver or pistol of .243 cal. or larger. Some Shooters in this event compete with T/C’s, XP’s-100’s & custom stock foreword pistolsshooting center fire rifle ammunition. The Long Range

Pistol shooters shoot standing and freestyle(Prone or Creedmore style), revolver shooters are not required to shoot from the standing position. The Action shooting has 2 divisions, stock and open, and seems to gather the most spectators.

There’s something very exciting about watching men and women race the clock as they engage targets of various size, shape, and height at distances from 9-20 yards.

Most of this year’s competitors are part of the “Masters Family” and have been shooting the event for many years because of the unique challenge it offers a shooter.

NSSF Sponsors USPSA Handgun Championships

Sedro-Woolley, WA — The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association for the firearms industry, has signed on as a Gold Sponsor for the 2008 Smith & Wesson Limited, Production and Revolver USPSA Championships as well as the USPSA Open and Limited-10 National Championships. Both matches will be held back to back in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the U.S Shooting Academy September 7-13, 2008.

“The National Shooting Sports Foundation has led the way in promoting the shooting sports in America through various programs and partnerships, and over the years USPSA has worked closely with NSSF supporting its efforts to educate the media and introduce new shooters through First Shots. We are extremely pleased to have them as a Gold Sponsor partner for our national championship matches,” said Dave Thomas, Executive Director of USPSA.

“NSSF is pleased to support the USPSA Handgun Championships as a gold sponsor,” said Steve Sanetti, president of NSSF. “Just as watching the Olympic Games drives people to become active, so handgun competition of this caliber showcases the excitement and skill of the shooting sports and serves as a motivator for those interested in giving shooting a try.”

More than 625 of the nation’s top handgun shooters, as well as several from outside the United States, are expected to compete in the championships where they will negotiate their way through stages on two field courses on their way to putting more than 280,000 rounds down range. The Handgun National Championships are the highlight of the practical shooting season in the United States, and in 2008, a preliminary for the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) World Championships at the end of October in Bali, Indonesia.

Camp Perry

Camp Perry, Ohio is located on Ohio Route 2, about four miles west of Port Clinton and about 40 miles east of Toledo on the shores of Lake Erie. Besides being an active military installation for the Ohio National Guard, each summer the nation's finest civilian and military marksmen and women square off for five weeks of rifle and handgun competition in a variety of formats and events.

The National Matches, considered by many to be, America's "World Series of the Shooting Sports", have been a tradition at Camp Perry, Ohio since 1907. The events are sponsored and run by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and the National Rifle Association (NRA) and hosted by the Ohio National Guard (OHNG) are well organized. The facilities are designed to enhance the shooting experience while at the competition and have been well maintained and remodeled to keep pace with modern standards. As an example of their efforts, this year competitors can enjoy a new Bath House for the Camp Perry RV Park, a new Air Gun range with 80 firing points, the Shooters' Memorial Plaza erected near the main flagpole in Camp Perry, road improvements, and the list goes on.

Restaurants, Lodging, a Daily List of activities, and more are available on site for competitors and their family's to enjoy while attending the competitions. Everyone who visits should be sure to take the walking tour of the Heroes of Camp Perry to learn about the various Medal of Honor recipients and other individuals whose selfless sacrifice for their comrades and country is honored at Camp Perry. Also, not to be missed is a visit to the NRA Museum to learn the history of the National Matches.

No matter if you're an Olympic Champion or a first time competitive shooter the pace is fast with almost endless number of competitions. Add to that the unpredictable Ohio weather and it becomes clear why many shooters feel that Camp Perry offers more challenges and shooting opportunities than anywhere else in the country.

Registration for this year's Pistol Matches is up slightly from last year's event which comes as somewhat of a surprise considering the cost of gas, the increased cost of ammunition, and the general state of the economy. Match organizers are predicting about 6000 contestants will attend this year's events which end in mid-August. To help with the events over 500 volunteers will assist as need to insure that the competitions run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. These are people like Phyllis and Jerry Neal from Willoughby, Oh who have been coming to Camp Perry since 1952. Jerry who has won the Ohio State Pistol Championship 13 times over the years volunteers as a coach and because of her experience and understanding of the matches Phyllis can be found working anywhere from Range Officer to score keeper. Never let it be said that shooters aren't passionate about their sport! If you go to Camp Perry, either as a competitor or as a visitor, you can't help but be impressed by the history, the tradition, and comradory. Shooting at Camp Perry isn't like shooting anywhere else and should be experienced by all shooters at least once but be careful as you might just get "hooked".

It’s A 3-Peat For Warren At USPSA Summer Blast

Sedro-Woolley, WA — Scott Warren knows his way around a 1911 pistol and proved it again by picking up the Single Stack Division title at the 8th Annual Summer Blast charity pistol match for the third straight year.

The Single Stack Division, so called because the model 1911 pistols used in competition feature magazines which hold just a single column of ammunition, is growing in popularity as more and more competitors opt to shoot the more traditional model pistol. The 1911 is also one of the most popular firearms sold in America.

Warren, a top ranked competitive shooter from Montclair, Virginia, won six of the ten stages and led the match from the first shots fired. He took the coveted Single Stack title by more than 96 match points with a score of 1227.7509.

“Scott is a formidable opponent when it comes to the shooting sports and competing with the venerable 1911 pistol in particular. He’s having a great year and I’m sure we can expect another win or two before the season ends,” said Larry Houck, match director of the Summer Blast.

Warren has already claimed Single Stack victories in the USPSA Area 8 Regional Championships as well as the USPSA Virginia-Maryland Sectional Championships. The Summer Blast represents the third major match win for Warren in the 2008 shooting season.

Rounding out the top five were Ed Deegan of Manassas, Virginia, who finished second with a score of 1130.7828 and Bill Hearne of Townsend, Delaware, who took third shooting a score of 944.6802. Hearne placed fourth in 2007. A pair of Keystone state shooters, Michael Alexander of Chester Springs, and Fred Balsley of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, finished fourth and fifth respectively with scores of 929.5304 and 799.2319.

Walsh Holds Off Carmoney For Summer Blast Win

Sedro-Woolley, WA — For the last two years at the Summer Blast, one of the major matches on the United States Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) calendar, Cliff Walsh of St. Petersburg, Florida, has found himself trailing Mike Carmoney of Mitchellville, Iowa. In 2006 he finished third and in 2007 he finished second. But this year would be a whole other story for Walsh.

“Cliff has been working his way up to first place in the Revolver Division and this was his year,” said Larry Houck, match director of the Summer Blast. “A lot of us watched this match closely knowing how tight it has been between these two shooters and the question was whether or not Mike could defend his title from last year. Cliff answered it for us by shooting a great match.”

Walsh won the match by more than 53 match points on the strength of six stage wins on his way to a score of 1231.1778. Carmoney won the remaining four stages but fell short of first place shooting 1177.7955.

Chad Rausch of Powell, Pennsylvania, who took first at the Area 8 Championships and second at Area 5, finished third with a score of 1045.7416. Robert Perdue of Falling Waters, West Virginia, claimed fourth shooting 1012.3146 while Patrick Scott of Stockport, Ohio, the Area 5 Revolver winner, finished fifth with 999.8263.

Olhasso Blasts His Way To Another Shooting Title

Sedro-Woolley, WA — Team Smith & Wesson member David Olhasso of Holland, Pennsylvania, shot his way to another Limited-10 Division victory at the United States Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) 8th Annual Summer Blast. Earlier this season Olhasso took the same title at the Area 8 Regional Championships.

“Dave is having a strong season and if his winning performance at the Summer Blast is any indication, he’ll be one of the shooters to watch at this year’s USPSA National Championships,” said Larry Houck, match director of the Summer Blast.

Olhasso, shooting a Smith & Wesson M&P45 pistol, dominated the Limited-10 field by winning the first three and the last three of the ten stages. Once he grabbed the mantle of frontrunner, Olhasso never let go and walked off with a 121 point lead and the title.

Local shooter Howard Thompson of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, managed to steal two stage wins on his way to second place with a score of 1103.5097. Steve Rubalcaba of Websterville, Vermont, finished third with 1031.8793. Sedro-Woolley, WA — James McGinty of Tabernacle, NJ, waited until the last possible moment to make his move and capture the Open Division title at the 8th Annual Summer Blast charity pistol match held July 10-13 in Dallastown, Pennsylvania.

“We’re thrilled to see James win. He shot a great match and demonstrated, that despite being a junior shooter, he has the poise to master the mental aspects of high level competition,” said Larry Houck, match director of the Summer Blast.

McGinty, who finished in 10th place in 2007, started the match strong by beating the entire field on the first stage, but immediately fell to second behind Clint Upchurch of Inman, South Carolina. Upchurch slowly built his lead over the next seven stages until McGinty, trailing in second by just over 23 match points, made his move by winning the final stage and the 2008 Open Division title with 1188.2518 points.

“Todd Jarrett is one of the country’s best shooters and, as one of those he beat this weekend, I can tell you he’s also one tough competitor. We congratulate him on winning back-to-back Summer Blasts. I just hope he takes next year off,” joked Larry Houck, match director of the Summer Blast.

Tar Heel Top Gun Wins Summer Blast Production Title

Sedro-Woolley, WA — It was better late than never as one of the Tar Heel state’s top guns, Michael Hollar of Conover, won the Production Division title in the final moments of the United States Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) 8th Annual Summer Blast.

Hollar battled back and forth for the lead with John Kruszka, and Nestor Laserna with each controlling the match at one point. Hollar won the first stage but immediately gave up the lead to Laserna before reclaiming it on the third and holding it through the sixth stage.

On stage seven, Kruszka of Woodbridge, New Jersey, surged ahead followed by a win on the eighth and carried the lead through the ninth. But the ninth course of fire set up Hollar for his move on the title. With a strong performance Hollar won the ninth stage leaving him just over 11 match points behind Kruszka.

The tenth and final stage gave Hollar his last shot at the title and he took it.

“Michael didn’t win the tenth stage but he shot it strong enough to pick up more than 27 match points on John and the match win. Shooting matches can turn on a dime and the Production Division battle clearly showed that. We congratulate Michael and the others on a great match and we look forward to watching this rematch next year,” said Larry Houck, match director of the Summer Blast.

Final results for the Production Division had Hollar winning with 1153.0291 points. Kruszka finished second with 1137.4748 while Laserna claimed third with 1087.3557.
